Be prepared for winter weather
With weather forecasts predicting temperatures around zero and wind chill factors dropping below that, it is important for parents to ensure children are properly dressed before they leave home for school.
Children will be exposed to the cold waiting for the bus or walking to school. Extended exposure to these conditions could result in health concerns like frostbite.
The following tips are provided to help reduce the risk of health problems caused by exposure in cold weather:
- Avoid prolonged exposure, more than 30 minutes. Consider carpooling with neighbors or friends.
- Children should not wait outdoors for their bus more than 30 minutes beyond the scheduled pickup time during extremely cold weather conditions. If your bus is late, go indoors and contact the transportation department at 523-0500.
- Wear layers of clothing, such as a T-shirt under a sweatshirt. Wear a warm coat for an outer layers.
- Prevent heat loss by wearing a hat and gloves or mittens. Mittens are warmer than gloves.
- Remember to wear warm socks and weather resistant shoes or boots.
- Get plenty of rest and eat a hot meal before school.
