Fifth-year seniors celebrated at Chamber event
May 10, 2007

About 50 Springfield Public Schools students were honored Thursday morning at the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce for successfully completing high school through the Missouri Option program.

Missouri Option provides an alternative means of earning a high school diploma for students who failed
PHS seniors Kellie Harman and Candice Fuller
to earn enough credits to graduate with their class but who meet certain guidelines established by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Springfield Public Schools.

Qualifying students will receive their high school diplomas from the district this spring.

Members of the chamber’s Looking Beyond High School committee volunteered at all five Springfield public high schools, working with Missouri Option students on practical subjects such as establishing budgets, preparing resumes, and interviewing for jobs.

Springfield Cardinals Sales and Marketing Vice President, Kirk Elmquist, was the featured speaker Thursday morning.

“You all are in a neat spot in your life,” Elmquist told the seniors. “Grab this opportunity and run with it. … Walk, talk, act and believe like the person you wish to become.”
