Kickapoo High School evacuated Monday morning
May 14, 2007

Kickapoo High School was evacuated for about an hour Monday morning after a teacher discovered an unfamiliar metal box under his desk in a theater classroom that had been burglarized over the weekend.

During the evacuation, a student claimed ownership of the box, which contained some make-up. Before she came forward, however, school officials - reacting cautiously and with student safety in mind - called the city fire department’s bomb squad to investigate because the box was found in the same classroom where the burglary occurred.

The student was not found to be at fault for leaving the make-up box in the classroom. Investigators are still looking into the unrelated break-in. Several pieces of audio-visual or computer equipment were stolen.

The school day resumed as normal about 11:30 a.m. and district soccer will be played at the school tonight as scheduled. More than 1,700 students attend Kickapoo.
