Consultant: need is real for new southwest school
December 7, 2007
The Springfield School Board received assurance Thursday there is a need for a new elementary school in the southwest part of the district.
During a special 90-minute board meeting at Kraft Administrative Center, consultant Jerry McCall indicated the need already exists to accommodate 150 students in a new school because of the current overcapacity at nearby McBride and Jeffries elementary schools. McCall’s research indicates the new school should be full within the next several years as residential development continues in the area.
The school’s capacity is expected to be around 500 students.
The board is scheduled to vote Tuesday, Dec. 11, on whether to approve the base construction bid of $7,708,000 from DeWitt & Associates along with nine alternates costing an additional $287,990.
The project was initially estimated to come in between $8 million and $8.3 million. Funding was approved when voters passed a $96.5 million bond initiative in April 2006.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room at Kraft Administrative Center, 940 N. Jefferson Ave.
