Computer skills earn Parkview graduate national honors

Parkview High School graduate Stacie Edgar placed sixth in the nation among 150 students at the 57th annual Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., where she represented Missouri in computer applications.

To qualify for the national competition, Edgar first had to be selected in both regional and state contests among more than 210,000 FBLA-PBL members. At the conference, she was among 7,500 elected student delegates competing in career skill events and attending business and leadership workshops.

Game show fundraiser to feature superintendent

Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Norm Ridder and his wife, Nadine, will be a contestant couple in Ozarks Counseling Center’s 15th annual “Not So Newlywed Game” fundraiser scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7.

The Ridders, who have been married 37 years, will join other couples for this light-hearted quiz show patterned after “The Newlywed Game,” a popular television show which debuted in 1966.

The event will be held at Landers Theater, 311 E. Walnut. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased by calling 869-9011. Read more about the event at ozarkscounselingcenter.org.

The “Not So Newlywed Game” is the major fundraising event for Ozarks Counseling Center, which provides quality counseling services regardless of a client’s ability to pay.

Pie in the Sky Literacy Institute begins Aug. 3

The Pie in the Sky II L3 Institute, sponsored by Springfield Public Schools, is Aug. 3-4 at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

The institute will benefit more than 500 area school administrators and curriculum directors, teachers and teacher leaders, instructional specialists, reading specialists and literacy coaches. It will feature nationally acclaimed authors and literacy experts Dr. Ruth Culham, Lester Laminak, Dr. Tim Rasinski, and Laura Robb. Participants in the institute will impact about 20,000 students in the coming year.

SPS receives Total Fleet Excellence rating

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Department of Public Safety recently completed its 2009 school bus inspection program and Springfield Public Schools earned Total Fleet Excellence status by obtaining an approval rating of 97.08 percent.

SPS was among 288 districts in the state to earn Total Fleet Excellence with an approval rating of 90 percent or higher. The awards will be distributed at the 43rd annual Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT) Conference and Trade Show in Columbia Wednesday, July 8.

MAPT is a statewide organization which recognizes student transportation as a basic contribution to effective educational programs. The organization strives to provide the highest quality of transportation service to Missouri's students.

Adam Meador named new principal at Bingham

Adam Meador has been named principal for Bingham Elementary School. 

He began his career in 2002 at Branson as a fourth-grade teacher. In fall 2005, he joined Springfield Public Schools and has taught both fourth and fifth grades at Holland Elementary School.

Meador was also a summer school administrator at Watkins Elementary School in 2008 and is the current administrator for summer school at Disney Elementary School. Meador obtained his Master of Education degree from Evangel University and is pursuing a doctorate in education at Lindenwood University.
