Report of Activities, 2006-2007 School Year
The Public Safety Department (SPS) of Springfield Public Schools operates under the auspices of its mission statement “To provide the District’s students, faculty and staff with a safe and secure learning environment.” This mission is accomplished with a department staff of twenty-one officers and eight communication clerks. Each SPS officer is licensed by the Missouri Department of Public Safety and commissioned through the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
The Department includes the Patrol Section, comprised of officers who serve the high school attendance areas; Site Based Section, which includes all officers assigned to specific school locations; Communications Section, which serves as the Department’s dispatch and records center; the Department’s Training Officer and Criminal Investigator; and the Department’s Administrators, which includes the Director, North Field Supervisor, South Field Supervisor and the Communications Supervisor.
All SPS officers provide services to the District’s students, staff, faculty, and community under the umbrella of the School Resource Officer (SRO) triad philosophy - law enforcement, teaching, and counseling. Upon employment each officer completes an eighty hour training course, followed by a forty hour SRO course that prepares them to work in the unique setting found within the school environment.
SPS Officers respond to approximately 5000 calls / requests for service a year, which may range from giving a simple presentation to kindergarten students on pedestrian safety to handling a school district call regarding felony criminal activity. The SPS Communications Center is also staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It is the Department’s duty and privilege to make sure the District’s safety is an on-going service.
