School Safety
Keeping students safe is paramount to everything we do at Springfield Public Schools.
While each school employs safety and security measures unique to the particular site, some strategies are universal across the district. For information specific to your child’s school, contact your principal.
Here is a checklist of measures in place to keep kids and schools safe:

Every school is required to have a visitor check-in procedure that includes identification badges for guests. Schools limit access to the degree their facility allows. This can be influenced by playground and parking lot locations and the age of the school. We try to build new schools with the most stringent access control measures possible.

All schools have comprehensive emergency management plans that include communication procedures, evacuation and in-place sheltering plans, relocation sites, floor plans, emergency equipment operating procedures and a variety of specific staff responsibilities for various types of emergency events.

Every school has an intercom system, weather alert radio, and two-way radios for communicating with emergency service responders from the school district.

All schools have counselors and access to nursing services.

Schools practice drills for fire, weather related, and intruder situations.

The district makes a “safety/security curriculum” available to all staff through our Public Safety Department.

The district has a “threat protocol” arrangement with the Greene County Juvenile Officer for the immediate intervention of students who make a serious threat of violence.

Every school has or is in the process of receiving a full risk assessment provided by the district’s insurance carrier.

Playgrounds and facilities are regularly inspected for hazards.

DARE is taught in the elementary schools.

School police officers regularly visit the school and are available for immediate dispatch in the case of an emergency.

Schools are equipped with various first aid and emergency supplies.

The district provides a hot line number for use in reporting threats of violence and other security issues; the phone is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A number of other strategies and security measures are used in schools across the district, which has been designated by the Missouri Center for Safe Schools as among few state school districts to reach the “showcase” level for security and safety.
