School board begins 2009-2010 budget discussions
Feb. 3, 2009
Springfield school board members last night agreed to two initial budget assumptions which will guide staff in developing the district’s 2009-2010 budget.
During its strategic discussion at the Feb. 3 study session, the board agreed to maintain a fund balance of at least 10 percent of operating expenditures and to consider implementing the Tier 1 stipend recommendations presented to the board in January.
While budget discussions will continue in the next few months, these two factors will enable staff to begin drafting a proposed budget. The school board must approve a budget by June 30, 2009.
In other business, the board considered:
- Proposed changes to Articles 10, 11 and 12 of Policy GDBF: Support Staff-- Maintenance, Custodial Service & Supply Center Workforce;
- A resolution authorizing the sale of lease participation certificates to fund the construction of the new Hickory Hills School; and
- A cooperative agreement with Greene County to share the cost of improvements to Farm Road 193 near Hickory Hills School.
Superintendent Norm Ridder and school board members also recognized several staff members for recent accomplishments:
- Linda Griffin, Glendale art teacher, named Missouri Art Education Association’s 2009 Secondary Art Educator of the Year;
- Lisa Lilley, Central foreign language teacher, named Central States Foreign Languages Teacher of the Year;
- Jeff Rogers, Glendale soccer coach and district wellness coordinator, named Midwest Soccer Coach of the Year; and
- Jim Whytlaw, Glendale swimming coach, named National Swimming Coach of the Year.
Presentations were also made to the district’s Finance Department for winning the Association of School Business Officials Meritorious Budget Award and to the school board for its energy-saving efforts which reduced the district’s electric consumption, saving more than $300,000.
