Zoo brings baby kangaroo to McGregor
November 21, 2007
Dickerson Park Zoo officials brought Yumi, a baby red kangaroo, to visit McGregor Elementary School students on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
McGregor is among eight Springfield Public Schools visited by the 9-month-old, 5-pound joey through Dickerson Park Zoo’s Animal Encounters program. Students learned how a marsupial develops and the difference between marsupials and other mammals. They also learned about the animal’s parents and natural habitat and were allowed to look at the baby kangaroo’s pouch.
The Animal Encounters program was developed five years ago to educate children about wildlife, their habitats and recycling to save resources. Baby Yumi will visit Rountree Elementary School on Nov. 28.
