Portland Elementary School receives literacy award

October 9, 2007

Portland Elementary School has earned the 2007 Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy Award from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Center for Literacy. Portland Principal Lora Hopper will receive the award during a luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Little Rock Statehouse Convention Center.

"We are thrilled to be recognized for the focused work of our highly professional staff in improving student literacy achievement,” said Hopper.  “Our continuous work on the relationship between our literacy framework, school-embedded professional development and intervention programs for struggling learners has enabled us to have a significant impact on the reading and writing success of our students."

The award acknowledges an exceptional school and leadership for its contributions to the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy Model. Winners are judged by three criteria. 1) The school embodies a professional learning community with opportunities for teachers to learn together. 2) A school-wide commitment to literacy has resulted in increased student achievement among all subgroups. 3) The staff has opened their doors to share their knowledge and experience with other educators.
