Starcatcher Aware PresentedSingled out for the personal interest he takes in the lives of students, Jack Wilson, head custodian at Bissett Elementary School, was named the district’s latest Starcatcher on Thursday, Oct. 25.

“You guys are like my big family,” Jack told students and staff who gathered to honor him during a surprise ceremony Thursday. “I appreciate all of you.”

Springfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Norm Ridder names three Starcatchers each school year as examples of employees who demonstrate a commitment to the mission, vision and goals of the district.

Jack began working for the district in 1995 and became Bissett head custodian in 2000. Last January, he donated items to a mother and her son who suffered a house fire during the ice storm. Jack mentored the boy and allowed him to help him around the school. He ate breakfast and lunch with the boy and gave him a special framed award at the end of the school year. Since then Jack has shared his time with other students, inspiring them to take ownership of Bissett and keep it clean.

Jack is also a master carver - he carved a special walking stick for the school and carves pencils for students.

“Jack is a shining example of what the Starcatcher Award is all about,” Superintendent Dr. Norm Ridder said during the ceremony.

The Starcatcher receives an exclusive pin in honor of long-time educator Dr. Wanda Gray and a framed certificate. Jack also received a $50 gift card and pancakes for the entire Bissett staff on Monday, Oct. 29. The gift card and breakfast are generously provided by Horace Mann Insurance agent Julie Kudrna, a district Partner In Education.
