Legislative Priorities

2008-2009

The Springfield School Board believes decisions related to a student’s education should be made as close to the student as possible. We do not support any legislative initiative formed to abridge or supersede local decision making. Additionally, we do not support mandated expenditures which limit
the Board’s budgetary discretion.

The Springfield School Board does not support tax credits or vouchers for students who attend privately funded schools.

– Public education dollars should remain in public education to ensure strong accountability and opportunities for all students to achieve excellence.

– Our public education system should expect continuous improvement with a strong focus on the needs of every student.

The Springfield School Board believes all students should be required to stay in school until age 18 to earn a high school diploma or its equivalent.

The Springfield School Board believes that fully funding the state's Foundation Formula is imperative to maintain an appropriate level of student services.

– If funds are not available to finance all mandates, the Board requests the state to reduce the mandates required through No Child Left Behind testing, the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP), and other areas.

– In order to meet standards established by MSIP and provide essential services, the Board believes it is imperative for the state to fully fund all categoricals related to the Foundation Formula.

The Springfield School Board supports legislation allowing school districts the option to generate revenue through sales, income and earnings tax.

In order to serve students from families at risk, the Board encourages the state to support the School-Based Clinician program proposed through the State Mental Health Department.
