Board approves American Sign Language course addition

The Springfield school board approved the addition of American Sign Language I to the course offerings for 2010-2011 at Parkview High School during its meeting Tuesday night. The proposal to add the course was initiated by Parkview High School and the district’s special education department to promote and enhance interaction between deaf and hearing-impaired students and students who are not deaf or hearing impaired. Parkview expects to offer the course during first block next year.
Kickapoo High School girls basketball coach Stephanie Phillips and Hillcrest High School boys basketball coach John Schaefer were recognized at the meeting. Phillips was named Class 5 State Coach of the Year by the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, and Schaefer was honored as Class 5 State Coach of the Year by the Missouri High School Basketball Coaches Association. Mark Fisher, director of athletics/student activities, was honored for his selection as Athletic Director of the Year for the Southwest District at the 38th Annual Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrator's Association (MIAAA) Conference.
Prior to the board’s combined meeting, Gerry Lee and Jean Twitty were sworn in by Greene County Clerk Richard Struckoff. Board officers were then elected: Gerry Lee, president; Dr. Tom Prater, vice president; Steve Chodes, treasurer; and Carol Roper, secretary.
Other action taken by the board Tuesday night:
- The board approved a "go to market" resolution authorizing George K. Baum and Associates to offer for sale up to $30 million of the approved $50 million in bonds to fund bond projects approved by voters in November. The remaining portion of the bonds will be sold at a later date.
- The board approved the adoption of curriculum resource materials for K-5 Science and 9-12 Business and Marketing Education.
- Administration presented the 2009-2010 third quarter report was presented, including updates from the mid-year Performance Series test and enrollment in district Choice programs.
