Feb. 3 , 2010

District administration and representatives from local arts organizations announced at the board of education’s Feb . 2  study session that Springfield has been selected by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to participate in the Any Given Child initiative. The Any Given Child initiative assesses district and community resources and facilitates the development of a comprehensive arts education plan for Springfield students.

The board also held a preliminary discussion regarding  its policy for local preference in purchasing professional services. The board directed administration to compile information regarding best practices, legal ramifications and how to define “local” before potentially revising the board’s current policy, policy DJD, regarding local purchasing and vendor relations.

Springfield Public Schools library services program received high marks from the state, according to the most recent program evaluation that was presented  Tuesday night. This is the second year in a row that all of Springfield Public Schools' libraries achieved the "Premium" standard, the highest level recognized by the state in the "Standards for Missouri School Library Media Centers."

The board also approved a revised calendar for the 2010-2011 school year, which corrects the Presidents Day holiday  to Feb. 21, 2011, when students will be out of school and district offices will be closed.

The complete agenda  for the February study session and related documents, including the library services program evaluation and minutes from the last board meeting, are available online.
