Aramark presents gift for Steve Smay Memorial Scholarship
March 16, 2010
Aramark presented the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools with a check for $5,000 for the Steve Smay Memorial Scholarship at the board of education’s March 16 regular meeting. Smay, the long-time director of nutritional services for Springfield Public Schools, passed away in July 2009. The scholarship is for Hillcrest High School graduates majoring in a science field at a local university who demonstrates the spirit of Steve Smay including generosity, positive attitude and a sense of humor.
The board also recognized the Hillcrest boys basketball team for winning the Class 5 state championship title.
A lease agreement for an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) facility located at 2525 W. College St. was also approved by the board. The facility will have 13 classrooms to serve students in the district’s growing early childhood program. The four ECSE classrooms currently located at Shady Dell Early Childhood Center will remain at that location. Funds from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will pay to lease the new facility.
The board will hold a work session to discuss the proposed 2010-2011 budget on Tuesday, April 6, from 5 – 8 p.m. at Hickory Hills School.
