Board approves contracts to air condition seven buildings
May 25, 2010
The Springfield school board took an important next step toward air conditioning all SPS schools at its May 25 regular meeting. Board members approved architectural and engineering firms for air conditioning projects at seven buildings. Contracts for projects at Boyd, Phelps, Robberson, Rountree, Sunshine, Tefft and York were awarded to four firms. All of those projects were approved by voters as part of the November 2009 bond issue.
Steve Chodes, district chief financial officer, told the board that a decision by the state legislature to reduce funding through the formula to all Missouri school districts, including more than 150 hold harmless districts, will increase state revenue for SPS by $850,000 over initial estimates. The proposed budget presented to the board at its May 10 budget work session assumed that hold harmless districts would not be included in the formula reduction. The board will consider a revised budget at its June 15 study session.
The board recognized three notable achievements:
- Boyd first grader Mia Olson was a national winner in the Scholastic Book Club poster contest.
- Nicole Andrews, a student at Central High School, won Missouri’s Poetry Out Loud competition, and competed in the national competition in Washington, DC.
- Kickapoo High School speech and debate coach Teresa Sparkman was honored for receiving the prestigious Sixth Diamond Award from the National Forensic League.
