The music program includes vocal and choral music, band, beginning strings and orchestra. Each grade level receives instruction on the various elements of music to include: expression, rhythm, form, melody, timbre, texture and harmony.
All elementary students participate in two, thirty-minute music classes per week and have the opportunity to participate in a public performance at least once yearly.
Middle school students may elect vocal or instrumental music. Music is offered to high school students as an elective course and fulfills the state and local graduation requirement of one unit in the fine arts. The high school curriculum offers courses of study in band, choir, orchestra, marching band, chorus, jazz band, advanced band, advanced orchestra and AP music theory. |
The visual arts program provides instruction that incorporates art production, aesthetics, criticism and history that nurtures the understanding of other cultures, thus preparing students to contribute to the world meaningfully and creatively.
The Springfield Public Schools visual arts program provides instruction by certified art instructors for every K-5 student one hour weekly.
Visual arts instruction is offered to middle school students as an elective choice or requirement depending on individual school requirements determined by the site-based management process. Art is offered to high school students as an elective course and fulfills the state and local graduation requirement of one unit in the fine arts. The high school curriculum offers twenty-two courses of studies in art foundations, applied arts, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, graphic design, metals/jewelry, painting, photography and portfolio development. |
