Things to Practice Before School Starts

• Recognize colors and shapes
• Write name on a line starting with a capital letter and the rest of the letters lowercase
• Recognize most letters of the alphabet (capital and lowercase)
• Begin to recognize letter sounds
• Read at home at least 10 minutes a night
• Use correct pencil grip
• Hold scissors correctly
• Count to 20
• Begin identifying and writing numbers to 20
• Know birthday
• Achieve parent separation
• Tie shoes
• Work on being responsible for personal needs (zipping and buttoning own clothes, going to restroom independently, blowing nose, etc.)
• Wean child from a nap
