How to Help on Homework
Research proves that children become better readers when their parents tutor them at home in reading! You can make your child a better reader!
How can you tutor your child?
1. Make it a habit. Students need to read for 20 minutes each day.
2. Listen to your child read. If he or she misses a word, simply tell them the word and let them go on. We'll focus on strategies for figuring out tricky words in class --- that's my job!
3. Don't just close the book and be finished! Talk with your child about the book. Reading is thinking!
Having trouble thinking of questions to ask your child before/during/after reading? Try these (not all at once, of course!):
- Which character do you like best? Why?
- Which character do you like least? Why?
- Have you learned anything from this book?
- Can you picture the setting? What is it like?
- Is anything in this book like your life?
- Does this book remind you of any other book you’ve read?
- What is this book mainly about?
- Is this book easy, just right, or challenging for you?
- What do you like about this book?
- If you could change something about this book, what would it be?
- What is the problem or conflict in this book?
- What do you think will happen next?
Most of all, have fun spending quality time with your child!
