THREE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS ANNOUNCED
Springfield Public Schools has named three new principals to fill vacancies at elementary schools for the 2010-2011 school year. Joe Dye will be principal at Bowerman Elementary School where he is currently a fifth-grade teacher. Janine Forrester will become principal at Watkins Elementary School. She is currently assistant principal at Pleasant View K-8 School. Laura McCray-Batson has been named principal of Pittman Elementary School. Since 2007, she has served as assistant principal at Hickory Hills K-8 School. Read more.

ARAMARK PRESENTS GIFT FOR STEVE SMAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AT MARCH BOARD MEETING
Aramark presented the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools with a check for $5,000 for the Steve Smay Memorial Scholarship at the board of education’s March 16 regular meeting. Smay, the long-time director of nutritional services for Springfield Public Schools, passed away in July 2009. The scholarship is for Hillcrest High School graduates majoring in a science field at a local university who demonstrates the spirit of Steve Smay including generosity, positive attitude and a sense of humor. "PIPKIN HELPING 'ROUND THE GLOBE WITH 'COCOA CARES'
Pipkin Middle School student council is leading the charge on a new initiative, “Cocoa Cares,” to raise money for Malagos Elementary School in the Philippines. Students have committed to raising $1,000 this year to provide computers and internet connectivity for the school, their online pen-pals in the “Cocoa Cares” program. Read more.
