Health plan changes approved by board
September 21, 2010
During its regular meeting Sept. 21, the Springfield school board approved changes to the district’s health plan, which will help balance the Health Benefits Trust.
The district operates a self-insured health plan so it must continually monitor the fund and make necessary adjustments to ensure an adequate balance to cover claims. In 2008, adjustments were made to reduce the balance in the HBT, including adding dental coverage at no additional premium cost to employees and reducing some premiums. To prevent a further decline in the balance, changes will be implemented to save about $2.2 million.
The changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2011. A detailed description of the changes and related costs may be viewed here.
Prior to the regular meeting, school board members met with State Auditor Susan Montee. A summary of that meeting is available here.
