Elementary schools transition to use of electronic grade book
February 09, 2012
Checking grades and homework assignments online will now be possible for parents of Springfield Public Schools elementary students. Beginning in February, each SPS elementary school will notify parents how they can enroll in Home Access Center to view grades, attendance, assigned work and registration information for their elementary students.
“The electronic grade book is a wonderful tool which promotes student engagement and parent involvement,” explained Superintendent Norm Ridder. “It allows parents to access information at their convenience and to support their child by being more connected to what is happening in the classroom each day.”
Obtaining a personal identification number is the first step parents must take to access their child’s information online. To protect student privacy, each parent must visit the school in person and present photo identification to obtain their individual PIN.
SPS has 36 elementary schools and each school will develop an implementation plan and timeline tailored to the needs and schedule of that particular school community.
“This is an exciting project and we know parents will be eager to sign up,” said Jason Anderson, coordinator of elementary schools. “We ask for everyone’s patience as we make this transition and encourage parents to wait for communication from their child’s school.”
Each school will communicate directly to parents, informing them of dates they can enroll, the process to follow and instructions for how to login to HAC and use its features.
McBride Elementary School is one of the first to begin enrolling parents. On Thursday, Feb. 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., parents may obtain their PIN at the school.
“We want to make this as simple and convenient as possible for parents so we have set aside an evening for them to drop in and sign for their PINs,” explained McBride principal Robert Reed.
McBride parents who cannot attend may present their photo IDs at the McBride office after Feb. 9 during regular school hours.
Implementation at the elementary level will complete SPS’ deployment of HAC. It began in 2010 at the high school level and was later made available to middle schools.
