Safety Procedures - A.M. Drop-off and P.M. Pick-up
In order to ensure that your child is provided a safe environment at Pershing Elementary School, we will be practicing the following safety measures:
- Beginning at 8:10 a.m., all parents, volunteers, and visitors to Pershing School will need to report to the main office located on the south side of the building. All exit doors will be locked except the south center entrance door from 8:10 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. Visitors will be asked to leave their keys and then they will receive a visitor’s badge. When visitors have finished their visit, they will return to the office, turn in their visitor’s badge, and receive their keys.
- If your child is late to school or you need to pick your child up prior to dismissal time, please report to the main office. No one will be permitted to pick up a child whose name does not appear on the computer emergency contact screen. If your emergency information needs to be updated or changed, please notify Mrs. Allen or Mrs. Tyler in the office.
- In the morning, if you are dropping off your child in the circle drive, do not park and leave your vehicle unattended. This causes traffic to backup in our parking lot, which is a safety issue for our children. When you exit the north circle drive, please turn right on Ventura to avoid traffic congestion. Please abide by the signage displayed in the circle drive.
- The city has posted signs on the west side of Ventura that no parking, stopping, or standing is permitted from 7-8 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Monday – Friday.
- At dismissal time, only kindergarten and first grade students will be dismissed from the circle parking lot located on the north side of the building. Vehicles should have a kindergarten or first grade permit displayed in their front car window. Do not park and leave your vehicle unattended. If you have children in kindergarten and/or first grade and an upper grade, they will be dismissed together at the Ventura door. When you exit the north circle drive, please turn right on Ventura to avoid traffic congestion.
- Students who walk will be dismissed prior to those students whose parents pick them up after school. Ms. Wells will be walking the students who walk south from the building to the corner of Ventura and Seminole and assisting them across the crosswalk.
- Students in grades 2-5 who are riders will be dismissed from inside the main Ventura entrance. They will be in a line inside the building with their teacher. Parents who are picking up their child will pull up on the east side of Ventura near the flag pole. When the child sees their parent/guardian, the teacher will dismiss the student to their parent/guardian.
- Drop off and pick up children on the east side of Ventura. Do not park your vehicle on the west side of Ventura. This is too dangerous for the children crossing the street. Students will not be dismissed to parents who park on the west side of Ventura. It is unsafe for a child to cross the street.
- Parents who walk to school to pick up their child should go to their child’s teacher, get their child, and their child is to remain with the parent as long as the parent is in the building or on the campus.
- Mr. Leeper will be supervising the sixth grade students who are waiting for rides.
- Never park or drop your child off near the crosswalk. This is illegal. Children must have clear access at all times to the crosswalk.
- You may wish to delay picking up your child 5 minutes. This delay will assist with traffic flow.
- Please obey the school speed zone.
- City traffic and parking regulations will be enforced by our School Police Officer and the Springfield Police Department.
- Use common sense and common courtesy. Remember, we set the example for our children.
