Mr. Apperson
Hello, My name is Allen Apperson, I teach mathematics and civics. I have included below, as links, information related to these classes.
I have review sessions for mathematics, after school, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from after school at 2:50 until 3:50. I send home a letter about this with the students. Please watch for it and if possible, and the student needs additional help, have them attend.
There is a fractions review and help session every Monday this spring using the District's Fraction Nation program. We meet in the computer lab until 4:00.
The goal of my 8th grade mathematics courses is to help all of our students understand and appreciate the mathematics they are studying; that they can read it, write it, and communicate it with confidence; and that they will be able to use mathematics as they need to in their lives. I believe that problem solving (investigating, conjecturing, predicting, analyzing, and verifying), followed by a well-reasoned presentation of results, is central to the process of learning mathematics, and that learning happens most effectively in a cooperative, student-centered classroom.
My intention is to have students assume responsibility for the mathematics they explore, turn in there assignments on time, participate in class discussions, and study for exams and quizzes. Encouraging students to participate in class discussions requires students to be active contributors in class each day, which, in turn, helps students to critically assess their own work and knowledge; and learn to ask effective and reasonable questions.
It is very important for students in mathematics classes to complete their homework assignments in a timely manner and study for tests and quizzes. I also highly recommend that if your child is having problems with multiplication that they practice frequently. When they are having problems with multiplying, and hence dividing, it greatly increases the time it takes to complete assignments and they will be more likely to neglect it all together or skip many problems.
The student supply list for both mathematics and civics classes is available at the link below:
I have provided all of my students with the directions, their password and username for accessing the Holt textbook on-line. This is a great resource. It has practice quizes and tests, and has help for the homework problems. I have attached a link to the directions to the Holt web page. If your student has lost their access information please contact me.

I have included the assignment sheets for Mathematics for the current unit below. You may use this to know what the assignments are and when they are due to be turned in, and when tests and quizzes are.
If you are a substitute for me, I have included some general information for your use in a link below.
Included in the Assignment section below are PowerPoints for the current chapter. You may print these off for notes for use in helping students with the subject matter.

During the first two weeks of school, after school from 3 to 4, I will have tutoring for students to review material related to fractions and integers or any other topics that a student feels they need help with. I will also stay after school on the following weeks when a student schedules time with me. Please allow me a day or two notice so that I check for any conflicts. I will be working the scoreboard for basketball games once they start so will definitely not be available on those days but will have regular help sessions on Tuesday's and Thursday's. I look forward to seeing your students as we work through this course material.
If you have any questions please send me an e-mail (Mr. Apperson’s Email), or call me at 523-2510 during my conference time (1:20-2:40).
