Supply List for Mrs. Whaley's Classes:
6th and 7th grade supply list: Pencils/eraser; Container for storage of art supplies; glue stick; colored pencils; scissors; notebook paper; black sharpie; 12-inch ruler that does not collapse; notebook paper and pocket folder for art only; box of tissues (if possible); paper plates for painting (if possible)
8th grade supply list: pencils/eraser; notebook paper; pocket folder used only for art; The art fee of $8.50 will not be collected this next year.

Daily Journal Entries must be kept in which students are required to create an entry by writing, drawing/sketching as listed on the SMART Board upon entry to the classroom. These entries will receive 1 point each day for every reasonable entry and will be required to use the entire 3-5 minutes allotted for this activity. No points will be earned for entries that: 1) are not dated; and 2) by teacher judgment, do not appear the student used the entire time given for the daily entry. Students absent are always required to make-up all entries for every day they are absent.
Since a high priority is placed on student responsibility, students are expected to bring their required materials and daily journal/sketchbook entry packet to class each day. Therefore, after the bell rings, students not allowed to their lockers when they forget necessary materials such as their pencil, books, art folder, art box or supplies, journal/sketchbook, homework or artwork, etc. Daily Journal Entries Introduction
Current Projects: Students have completed all 100 point projects for this 2011-2012 school year. Currently they are working on projects for bonus points and a review game on the Element of Color.
Self-Portrait Drawing using Clay
Objective:Students will compose a Self-Portrait with accurate placement and proportions for the details of facial features. This 2011 school year, Mrs. Whaley's 6th graders will learn the correct proportions, then rather than to shade their drawings, students will use self-drying clay to complete the details of the face (eyes, nose, mouth, hair...). They will then use acrylic paint for the final phase of the project. Examples below are from first semester classes.

Abstract Self-Portrait
Objective: Students will design an Abstract Self-Portrait which incorportates symbols representing personality traits about them. The background design is painted in a monochromatic color scheme, and at least 3 colors of an analogous color scheme on the portrait.

Completed Projects:
Name Design Based on a Theme
Objectives: 1)Students willl create a Name Design based on a theme using the letters of their first name and at least 3 additional images, symbols, or objects related to the theme. 2)Students will then write a Narrative (5-sentence paragraph) explaining how all images relate to the theme of their Name Design.

Geometric Still Life Drawing
Objective: Students will create a Geometric Still Life Drawing based upon the notes on Drawing Geometric Forms Accurately and the 4 Phases of Drawing a Still Life discussed in class. Link to 4 Phases of Drawing a Still Life: Drawing a Still Life - 4 Phases
As of TBA, students should have determined the placement and proportions of the still life forms, then accurately drawn each form according to the notes provided previously. Link to these notes are: Drawing Geometric Forms with Accuracy
TBA, instruction will begin on shading the geometric forms of their still life. Link to this Powerpoint lesson: Smooth Blended Shading

Students had finished lessons preparing for the Still Life Drawing based on basic geometric forms. Each dayin previous weeks, students are learning how to draw a new geometric form. They them draw 4 more forms, as instructed, for further practice.

Analogous Watercolor Painting
Objective: Students will use knowledge of Analogous Color Schemes to create a Non-Objective Watercolor Painting.
Due Date: May 16, 2012 for 1st hour; May 17, 2012 for 5th hour
Objective: Students will demonstrate knowledge for the correct proportions of the human figure to create a 12-inch sculpture, then paint a creative design on the sculpture using an analogous color design.

Non-Objective Design Based on the Elements of Art
Objective: Students will apply knowledge of concepts for each of the Elements of Art to create a Non-Objective Design.

Still Life Composition
Objective: Students will create a Still Life Composition based upon the Elements of Art and the 4 Phases of Drawing a Still Life discussed in class. Link to 4 Phases of Drawing a Still Life: Drawing a Still Life - 4 Phases; Link to Grading Criteria: 7th-Still Life Drawing Grading Criteria

Printmaking
Objective: Students will plan a design to create a Relief Printing block from clay, then print a design composition.
Students rolled a flat slab of clay to later carve and print.
Next, students create their design, then carve out the design using basic wooden or plastic carving tools.
Finally, students will print their design using their clay printing block.
DUE DATE: To be announced one week before due date

Completed Projects:
Drawings with Blended Shading
Objective: Students will draw an object from observation based on the 4 following criteria: 1)Considerable detail; 2)Smooth blended shading; 3)At least 5 value differences; 4)smooth, gradual transitions between all 5 values
Current Drawing Activity: Students are practicing their shading skills for the latter 3 criteria listed above by 1)evaluating student drawings; 2)practing their shading skills by shading an outline of a teapot from photograph provided.
Next, students will draw and complete shading an object of their choice and improve their shading skills based upon the 4 criterion listed in the objective.

Landscape Paintings based on the Elements of Art
Objective: Students will create a Landscape Painting based on the concepts involving the Elements of Art, specifically creating depth of space and form, and these additional criteria: 1) 3 levels of space - foreground, middle ground, background; 2) At least one object/person in the foreground and middle ground painted as a rounded, three-dimensional form.
Students are working in groups of 2-3 to design, plan, and paint their landscape painting.

Printmaking
Objective: Students will plan a design to create a Relief Print using Asymmetrical Balance and Progressive Rhythm, mixing tints and shades of a hue, and follow all safety procedures. Link to PowerPoint Lesson: 8th gd Printmaking Intro-Rhythm
Requirements to be able to carve their design into the rubber printmaking block: 1) Students need to return the Compliance Form signed by both student and their parent/guardian; 2) Pass a Safety Test with 90% or better 8th gd Printmaking Safety Wrksht with Answer Key; 3) Complete their Printmaking Design Plan 8th gd Printmaking Design Planning.

American Artists Power Point and Quiz
Objective: Students will... 1) research and create a Power Point on American Artist and their artwork; 2) connect characteristics or style to correct artist.

Clay Mugs
Objective: Students will create a functional object (i.e. mug) by appropriately joining clay coils, and carving a decorative design.
DUE DATE: Last day to work on mugs in class - Thurs. April 26th. Friday, April 27th the mugs will be shipped to Springfield Pottery for bisque firing, glazing, and final glaze firing.
Due date usually the Friday before Winter Break for first semester and Friday before Spring break for second semester. Students may still come in before school or after school to finish their clay mug until Thurs before due date. On this day student mugs will be transported to Springfield Pottery for firing. The will return glazed and fired approximately in 3 weeks.




8th Graders Last Project: One-Point Perspective
Objective: Students will identify and use One-Point Perspective to create the illusion of the depth of space.
