School Profile:
- Central High School was built in 1893 and is the oldest high school in Springfield. A $23-million building renovation was completed in 2003.
- Located in the heart of Springfield, Central has a diverse population of 1,407 students and a variety of programs for all including the A+ program and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, a rigorous college-level academic program that opens doors for students to many universities. We also have the Middle Years Scholars Program for highly gifted sixth-, seventh-, and eighth- grade students. This rigorous program currently serves approximately 120 students. (See pages 69 for more information about IB and MYSP.)
- Central students have received the highest ACT scores in the city since 2004 and continue to outscore their state and national peers. In 2008 and 2009, the school had 13 National Merit finalists, and 13 commended National Merit finalists.
- Central received the Bronze Award in 2007 and 2008 from U.S. News and World Report for being one of “America’s Best High Schools.” Also in 2008 and 2009, Newsweek and the Washington Post named Central to the top 5 percent of all U.S. high schools based on the number of advanced placement or International Baccalaureate exams given in proportion to its total graduating class.
- Our speech and debate teams have won national rankings. Band, choir and drama departments are thriving, and our print and broadcast journalism students consistently receive national attention and awards.
