School Profile:
- David Harrison Elementary School, Springfield Public Schools’ brand new elementary school, opened its doors in August 2009. The school was named after Springfield author David L. Harrison, who also served as school board president. He has written over 70 children’s books and has been a strong advocate for Springfield Public Schools’ libraries. The current student enrollment is 420.
- Our school offers TRACKS (Technology Rich Atmosphere Concentrating on Kids’ Success) in response to the school community’s desire for technology-enriched instruction. All 20 classrooms, plus computer lab, library, art and music rooms, will be equipped with Smart Boards and an abundance of student computers. Similar to the eMINTS program, classrooms in grades 3 and 4 will have one computer for every two students. In kindergarten through grade 2, classrooms will have one computer for every four students.
- David Harrison Elementary has a diverse student population. Approximately 70 students are in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, which is also housed at the school.
- David Harrison Elementary offers before- and after-school care through the SPARC program. SPARC offers after-school extracurricular activities such as martial arts, chess club, floor hockey, scrapbooking, cooking club, cheerleading, tennis, golf, basketball, baseball, soccer, mad science, and more.
- All members of David Harrison Elementary are fully certified educators. We implement Continuous Classroom Improvement (CCI) in every class to increase student engagement and achievement. Through CCI teachers and students determine the class mission and weekly goals; work together to create and carry out a plan to achieve the goals based on what is effective for students; study data by discussing and charting student results; and decide how students should act upon the data to improve achievement.
