School Profile:
- We are a neighborhood school where students, parents, teachers and business partners focus on the success of our 235 students and help develop pride in our community.
- Portland was among only 16 schools in Missouri named a Missouri Gold Star School for 2006-2007. This award recognizes Portland for meeting U.S. Department of Education assessment criteria as a Title I school by making steady academic improvement in communication arts and math.
- We are a Partnership in Comprehensive Literacy model school, which fosters a strong professional learning community focused on the success of every student. Portland has a dedicated staff of 35. Ninety percent of our classroom teachers have been trained in the literacy model. We have a literacy coach and a reading and math specialist on staff. Portland received the prestigious 2008 National Partnership in Comprehensive Literacy Award.
- More than half of our students participate in Portland Academy, an after-school, project-based education enrichment program which is free to Portland students.
- Portland is developing a hands-on science laboratory where students can study such topics as robotics, the solar system, plant and animal life, and force and motion. We will integrate technology as part of the inquiry learning process in our science lab.
