School Profile:
- York Elementary first opened in 1911 in northwest Springfield and is named after Civil War veteran William York. We are a neighborhood school that helps 216 students achieve academic success in a safe, respectful and nurturing atmosphere.
- Our staff has high expectations for our students as we develop relationships by caring, motivating, and expecting self-regulated learners in all aspects of the educational process.
- Our student-teacher ratio of 21 to 1 enables teachers to provide individual attention and support for each student to ensure they reach their full academic potential.
- We have a specific focus on character education and social skills. We have a weekly assembly to celebrate accomplishments that have occurred the previous week and visit about the upcoming week’s expectations.
- York provides the Springfield-Greene County Park Board CLICK after-school program. This free program offers recreation, snacks and tutoring to help boost students’ academic performance.
- Strong partnerships with various community groups and businesses make a positive difference in the lives of our students. Wesley and Schweitzer Methodist churches, James River Assembly of God, North Point Assembly of God, Second Baptist Church and Dairy Farmers of America are York’s primary Partners in Education. Caring Communities is a strong advocate for students’ success.
- York utilizes Title I federal funding to provide intervention and support programs, including pre-school Wonder Years, so all students can be successful.
