History

  York Elementary School, located in northwest Springfield, was constructed in 1911.  It was named after William York, a  disabled Civil War veteran, who circulated a petition in the fall of 1910 requesting the construction of a school in that area.   The following is a timeline of the school's development.

1930 First addition of 5 classrooms and restrooms.  7,782 sq. ft.
1954 Second addition of 4 classrooms and a multipurpose room.  11,061 sq. ft.
1967 Third addition of 2 kindergarten rooms and 1 classroom.  4,153 sq. ft.
1991 Fourth addition of a learning resource center and 2 classrooms.  630,000 sq. ft.
